I got the chance to try out the new Call of Duty 4 Modded Xbox 360 Controller from GamerModz. The controller had a different look to it, which I did not expect. The mods the controller came with were on the back of the controller in a four button layout [pretty much the same layout as the Halo 3 controller we reviewed]. They were from right to left, the rapid/fast reload, the hold your zoom/breath (yeah, we know that at this point most users are probably scratching their heads, but we’ll explain this shortly), along with melee and the infamous rapid fire. Let’s take a closer look at each of these little mods, shall we?

Rapid Reload: This mod is a thing that many gamers probably want, especially whilst using the larger guns in CoD 4. It really helped out when I zoomed in on an opponent, and had to reload, when I pushed the button, the gun reloaded, and automatically re-zoomed which I thought was pretty cool. Not a huge thing, but cool nevertheless. It auto rezoomed only when I had the Hold Zoom/Breath mod going, which I'll talk about next. Rapid reload was a pretty interesting feature. The smaller guns such as the M-16 and M-14 etc, didn't really seem affected by rapid reload, as the reload didn't speed up noticibly. Now with rapid reload, there is a slight catch. You have to stop firing before you tap the rapid reload for it to work correctly. But with the larger guns, such as the M249SAW and M60E4, the rapid reload was heaven. The gun basically reloaded within 1-2 seconds rather than the much longer time they take to reload, and the rapid reload button worked with a tap. So I assume the rapid reload was intended for use with the larger guns. So in short, rapid reload isn't too special for the smaller guns, but really helps out with the larger ones.

Hold Zoom/Breath: I felt that this was a pretty neat feature. It allowed me to lock my zoom, and not have to hold the left trigger to keep zooming. As I said in the section above, if I used the Hold Zoom/Breath mod going, and pushed the rapid reload, or the normal reload button, I zoomed back in. If I pressed the (mod) button a second time, I zoomed out. This button, unlike the rapid reload worked quite well with pretty much all of the guns, and would definitely come in handy for a sniper.
Melee: Our third mod to discuss was made to cater to all of you melee nuts out there. I really liked this one as instead of pressing the right analog stick, I could just hit the melee mod button with my middle finger (insert joke about killing someone while using your middle finger here) and the character would melee. The mod just felt comfortable and was very quick.

Rapid Fire: This mod actually made the pistols much more useful. The rapid fire mod had an on and off toggle, which allowed me to use the trigger for the rapid fire. So when I first pushed the button, the rapid fire turned on, and worked quite well. A second time, and rapid fire is off, and when I pushed the right trigger, it was obvious that rapid fire was absent. The toggle switch was a good idea on the controller as rapid fire didn't work for all weapons, and at times made the ROF [Rate of Fire] worse along with accuracy. For instance, I tested the button on the MP5, and the accuracy really went down when I turned Rapid Fire on. The rate of fire however, remained pretty much the same. Then I tested the RP-90, and the rate of fire went down, when I turned rapid fire on, but went up when I turned rapid fire off. The accuracy however went up when rapid fire was turned on (probably because the bullets were coming out at a slower rate). So really what saved this feature was the on/off toggle switch. However this was very useful with guns like the M21. It really made it more like a sniper/machinegun. You can take a look at the Gamermodz rapid fire chart here, as it outlines exactly which guns work best with the rapid fire.

The new look: I really thought this controller looked extremely professional with the new look in place. It had this exquisite suede-like texture, which made it feel really nice to hold. But what really pleased us here at XBO was the way the buttons lit up. A,B,X,Y all lit up along with Start and Select. RB and LB also lit up. The buttons were see-through which was kind of cool, and the infamous Xbox logo in the middle was absent and replaced with another button. (pictures for a better idea). One minor problem we thought should be brought up was that we used a rechargable battery pack in our controller. When we put the pack in, it didn't fit quite normally, and was a bit tight. Not too big of a deal, as it came out without a hassle. Again, not that big of a deal. But really, the looks of the controller hit home.
Overall, the controller would make a nice purchase for a CoD 4 enthusiast. I again, felt that the $179 price was a bit high, for a controller.
I mean, sure new look, mods and everything, but something close to $200 for a controller, might take a second thought. The learning curve was pretty short close to 40 minutes. Not too bad. But there are alot of positive points to the controller, as far as the usefulness of the rapid fire and hold zoom/breath mods goes. I really felt that they were a nice add to the controller. So I mean, this thing won't make you a CoD 4 pro just by using it, as you get better at games with practice. Gamermodz did a good job getting a modded controller out with a revitalized look. So again, if you're a hardcore CoD 4 gamer, and really don't give other games that much time, then get this. Otherwise, give it close thought. The controller is good, but not $179 good. There are a bunch of other mod variations to choose from, and some have fewer mods and are priced lower. So be sure to also get those into consideration.
